SWELLENDAM 

The name for Suurbraak was originally the San word ‘Xairu’ meaning beautiful or paradise, so it's the perfect place to explore on your mountain bike.

​

The creators of these routes are the same guy and girl responsible for the great trails at Grootvadersbosch Conservancy. There are two routes, both starting and ending at the Tourism Info office across the Mission Church. The green route explores the mountain's side of Suurbraak and the blue route in the opposite direction, winding through the streets of Suurbraak before entering the surrounding farms. Both routes have a lot of climbing per kilometer and should not be underestimated.

Where do routes start and end:

At the old Mission Church - 1 Rossouwplein Street.

Where do I get a permit:

Paradise Organic - only 600m from where the trails start.

​

What does a permit cost:

R30 - R50 for a day permit

About R350 a year for a Grootvadersbosch Conservancy permit, which includes all the trails at Suurbraak and Grootvadersbosch Conservancy.

 

After ride:

Paradise Organic or Jump in the River or both

Important Note:

1) When riding in Suurbraak a dog might chase you. This is Africa - pretend it is a lion.

2) 8 out of 10 people will not be able to ride over all the mtb bridges - walk if necessary, the closest hospital is in Swellendam.

3) The trails are adventure-style, not manicured and super clean. So if you like tar-road riding rather try Tradouw Pass.

4) If you get lost select the Google link above and switch on the GPS on your phone. In some areas the sheep trails might look like mtb trails and get you lost.
